It means 'beautiful, paired, attached.' The Yijing makes it central: 离卦 declares '日月丽乎天，百谷草木丽乎土' (sun and moon adhere to heaven, grains and plants adhere to earth). The Liji (祭义) and Shujing (毕命) use 丽 for brilliant array. As a free morpheme 丽 means 'beautiful, elegant, to attach,' positive in 美丽, 风和日丽.
