Cultural Story

伎 is 人 with 支, a person with a branch of skill, the performer, the one who does. The 說文 reads it as the female performer. 歌伎 were the singing women of the Tang wards; 伎藝 the arts of the courtesan and the acrobat. 伎俩 is the trick, skill turned sly. The character is the trained hand, the woman who sang for her keep, the skill that could serve or deceive.

Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

伎俩 is the trick of the exposé, 阴谋伎俩, the schemer's tricks. 歌伎 is the historical singing girl of the Tang; 伎艺 the old word for artistry. The character has narrowed to trickery and the antique performer; you will not call a modern artist 伎. It survives in the rebuke of the deceiver and the costume drama's music house, the skilled hand now more often suspected than praised.

Why this character belongs on skin

伎 began honestly: a companion radical 人 beside 支, a supporting hand—skill, craft, the trick of a trade. Then it slipped sideways into performance, into 伎乐, the music and dance of Tang courtyards where girls in gauze sleeves spun under lamplight while poets forgot their cups. The word still carries both meanings, dexterous hands and theatrical charm, competence with a little glitter on it. There is a whole worldview in that doubling: art and cunning were never really separated in the old mind. A juggler, a calligrapher, a con artist, a violinist—the character shrugs; it is all 伎, the human body doing something the body was not born knowing how to do. And 伎俩, its scheme-sense, reminds us that skill cuts both ways. To wear it is to own your craft without false modesty: the thousand hidden hours behind the performance, the trick you can do that no one watching believes is possible.
