Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源

2 · The Character: 妆 妆 (zhuāng, 1st tone; traditional 妝). Shuowen Jiezi: 妝,飾也。从女,牀省聲 — 'to adorn; from 女, with 牀 abbreviated as phonetic.' Adornment here is a deliberate act of composition, not vanity: to arrange a face, a head of hair, a presentation. The Yuefu ballad of Mulan gives its most famous line: 《樂府詩集·木蘭詩》 '阿姊聞妹來,當戶理紅妝' — hearing her sister has come home, the elder sister does her rouge at the door. History gives it a darker turn: 《後漢書·梁冀傳》 records Sun Shou inventing 愁眉、啼妝 — 'sorrow brows' and 'weeping makeup,' a deliberately grief-struck cosmetic style that swept the capital. 妆 is bound-leaning: 化妝 (makeup), 紅妝 (a woman in finery), 嫁妝 (dowry). Honest disclosure: in contemporary Chinese 妆 reads overwhelmingly as the cosmetics category — 美妝 is the beauty industry — so a solo 妆 can look like a brand mark rather than a statement; and 嫁妝 makes it a transactional word too.

Cultural Story

The old form 妝 (or 粧) means to adorn and dress, a character of the woman (女) at her toilette. The Yuefu poems paint the 紅妝, the red makeup of the bride, and the 妝奩 was the trousseau chest a daughter carried to her husband's house — her mirrors, powders, and silks. Mulan, 'facing the window, arranges her cloud-like hair,' is 妝 in motion. For the classical woman 妝 was both daily rite and ceremony, the art of presenting herself rightly to the world and to the eye of the family.

Where a Western reader can stand: Where a Western reader can stand: 'adornment' — the willow dressed in jade, the first word of He Zhizhang's 咏柳; but inked alone it reads as a beauty-brand logo (美妆), so pair it (红妆, 碧玉妆成) and carry the poem with it. He Zhizhang's brush survives only in literary fame.

Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

A bride 化妝 (applies makeup) for the wedding; a teen 妝扮 (dresses up, adorns) for the school festival. A vlogger reviews her 妝容 (makeup, look), and an heiress's 妝奩 (trousseau, dowry, bridal chest) becomes a museum piece. The 紅妝 (bridal, red makeup, bride) tradition survives in the red wedding gown, and a salon offers 化妝 classes. 妝 is the modern word for makeup and adornment — the daily mirror, the festive face, and the bride's red that links today's aisle to the old trousseau chest.

Why this character belongs on skin

The character pairs a woman with the implements of ornament — the art of making the face a deliberate thing. 妆 is not vanity; it is the ancient rite of becoming, the paint and powder by which a person declares who they will be that day. We are uneasy with adornment, calling it superficial, but the warrior arms, the priest robes, the lover darkens her eyes for the same reason: to meet the world armored in intention. To wear 妆 is to own your own making. A tattoo of this word belongs where you prepare yourself — the mirror-line of the collarbone, the wrist you paint before leaving. Let it mark the small sacrament of the morning, the brush in the hand, the decision to be beautiful on purpose. You are not born finished; you are dressed into being, and the adornment is the honesty, not the disguise.
