侠 is the free sword. The 史记 honors 侠客 who righted wrongs the law ignored; 武侠 tales of the Tang tell of men who 侠义 rode to save the weak. A 大侠 or 侠女 owed loyalty to no lord. To be 侠 was to carry justice in the hand, outside the court.

Why this character belongs on skin

He rides out of the dust with no commission and no name worth buying, and the village understands him before he speaks: this is 侠, the wandering blade who rights what the law was too slow to touch. The 侠 asks for no title. He owes allegiance only to a private code written in older ink than any emperor's. In a world that rewards the cautious, there is a particular courage in the man who draws his sword for a stranger. The Daoists knew him too — free of office, free of fear, beholden to nothing but the wrong he cannot abide. If something in you has always answered to no flag, this is your character.
