Zhuangzi tells of an old man, bent and 伛偻, who caught cicadas with a sticky pole as surely as though he plucked them from a pocket. The hunchback's stillness let him forget his own crooked back. The word 偻 named the bent spine of age and focus alike — the body folded so completely into a task that nothing else remained.

Read the story behind the character

A grandmother is 佝偻 from years at the loom; a clinic treats 偻指 stiffness in the fingers. The word now names the bent and the aching — a curved back, a counted set of joints — the small physical costs of age and labor, spoken in waiting rooms and kitchens where the old still bend to the work younger hands have left them.

Why this character belongs on skin

偻 is the back bent — by age, by decades of toil, or by courtesy deliberately deepened into respect. The same curve carries opposite meanings, which is the character's quiet joke: the porter bowed under loads he never chose, and the elder bending kindly toward a child, folding himself down to her height so their eyes can meet. Confucius, entering the ancestral temple, drew his tall frame down in reverence, 偻 as if the very ground were sacred — the greatest man in the state, stooping on purpose. Humility, the tradition insists, is not self-hatred but accurate measurement: you are one person among billions, and simultaneously the only one who can make your particular bow. Age bends us all eventually, whether we learned the grace or not, and it does not ask permission. So practice the bow early, while it is still voluntary. It becomes, in time, a beauty.
