Cultural Story

The Book of Songs, in 芣苢, has the gatherers 薄言掇之, stoop and pick the plant up, the simplest of harvest motions set to a chant. 掇 is the bend and the lift, the first verb of foraging, older than the plough, and the women who chanted it were really counting, one plant at a time, the medicine they would later brew for the barren among them.

In the modern world

You 拾掇 the room; a scholar 掇拾s lost lines; a gossip 攛掇s two friends into a quarrel. The stoop for the plant is a tidy now. The bend and lift is the same, whether it gathers a weed, a poem, or merely another person's trouble to stir, and the lost lines are only the plant, transplanted from a field to a footnote.

Why this character belongs on skin

The gesture comes before the word: fingers closing on something small and worth keeping. Duo is to pick up, to pluck—a hand gathering fallen chestnuts, a girl in the Book of Songs plucking fern shoots until dusk, the poem repeating itself like a rhythm of work and longing. In the Shijing, gathering is how people thought about time and love: they gathered, and gathered, and each season the green things returned or did not. There is no grandeur in this character, and that is its seduction. It honors the small harvests—the hours you bent and collected what the day dropped for you: a kindness, a sentence, a lesson that only made sense years later. Taoism says the Way is found in exactly such low, ordinary reaching. To choose this for your skin is to declare yourself a gatherer: someone who refuses to let beauty lie on the ground unpicked. Look at it and remember the orchard, the dusk, the hand. Some things are only kept by those who bend down.
