蛟 is the flood dragon, younger and rougher than the true dragon, master of rivers and floods. Legends sent heroes after it: young Zhou Chu, a town's self-declared scourge, dove into the river to kill the 蛟 that terrorized boatmen and returned after three days, reformed, to become a model of turning over a new leaf. 蛟龙得水 — a flood dragon finding water — means talent finally in its element.

Modern China lent the name to its deepest explorer: the 蛟龙 (flood dragon, mythic dragon) submersible, which dives the ocean trenches with crew aboard, its feats streamed to classrooms.
