2 · The Character: 室 Shì (4th tone). The Shuowen reads 室 as 「实也。从宀从至」 — 'full, substantial; from 宀 (roof) and 至 (to arrive).' A roof that is reached and filled is a real room, a household. Confucius grades mastery by it: 《论语·先进》 「由也升堂矣，未入于室也」 — 'You (Zilu) have ascended the hall, but not yet entered the inner room' — the inner 室 being true mastery. So 室 means the inner sanctum, the family, the wife (妻室). Grading: a free, solid morpheme — room, household, the inner chamber. No negative sense. Disclose that 室 is the 'inner room' of mastery (not just 'room'), and can mean 'family/spouse'. In law 室 meant the wife and her quarters (妻室), the core of the household; in medicine the 'inner room' becomes the body's chambers. The idiom 登堂入室 (mount the hall, enter the room) grades a learner from competent to master — exactly the 室 Confucius meant.
