Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源
2 · The Character: 抱 Bào (4th tone). The Shuowen: 「抱,袌也。从手包聲」 — to embrace, from hand (手) with 包 (bāo, 'wrap') for sound. The motion is the enfolding arms. Classical: 老子《道德经》 「见素抱朴」 (show the plain, embrace the uncarved); 《史记·魏公子列传》 「抱关击柝」 (hold the gate); and 抱负 is ambition held close. 抱 is also 'to harbour' (抱憾 = regret) and 'to incubate' (抱卵). Grading: 抱 is warm and positive — 'embrace / hold / cherish' (怀抱, 抱抱) — and stands alone lovingly. Disclose the 'regret / harbour' shades (抱憾, 抱病). A fine standalone for 'to hold close'.
Cultural Story
抱 is to hold to the chest, and the 道德經 teaches the sage to 抱一 — embrace the one — as the pattern of the world. The histories use 抱负 for the ambition a young man carries like a child. The hand with 包, to wrap, is the enclosing hold. It is the embrace and the burden both.
Where a Western reader can stand: Where a Western reader can stand: 抱 is the embrace — amplexus — and Huang Xiang makes it the daily, unglamorous kind: the boy who fanned his father's pillow cool in summer and warmed the sleeping mat with his own body in winter, a name like a saint's-day story rather than a signature artist. Honest caveat, stated plainly: Huang Xiang is not attested as a calligrapher, no work of his survives or is claimed, and the 书 counted in his bibliography is the prose genre of letters, not brushwork — so the hand here is the Han clerical period style, plain and ruled, worn by a name that stands for conduct. That is the honest embrace: devotion as habit, not as art.

Read the story behind the character

Why this character belongs on skin
Hold. 抱 is the second half of the hug, the part that stays — the cradle of arms that does not let go the moment things get true. We spend so much of our lives being told to set down the parts of us that are heavy, as if our tenderness were a burden on the world. But 抱 says keep holding. Hold your person through the 3 a.m. dread. Hold the kid version of you who didn't have the language yet. Hold the friend whose family went quiet. This is the character of carrying weight with love instead of against it — the spine that bends to lift, not to break. There is a holiness in being held and in holding; both are survival. You might wear this one where only your own hand can find it, a small reminder that you were meant to be caught.
