2 · The Character: 成 Chéng (2nd tone). The Shuowen: 「成，就也。从戊丁聲」 — to complete, from 戊 (a broad axe, the fifth heavenly stem) with 丁 for sound. The sense is fulfilment: 《诗经·大雅·灵台》 「庶民攻之，不日成之」 (the people built it, finished in no time); 《尚书·益稷》 「箫韶九成」 (the nine completed movements of the music); 《论语》 「君子成人之美」 (the noble man completes others' good). Grading: 成 is one of the most positive characters — 'complete / succeed / become' — and stands alone flawlessly (成功, 成事). Disclose only that 成 also serves as a measure for completed musical movements (九成) and as 'already' in some classical uses. A premier standalone for 'to make it so'.

Cultural Story

成 is the thing brought to completion. The 易經 reads it as the settle of a matter, and the histories use 成功 for the campaign that actually ended. The character once showed a weapon and a man, the deed done. It is the finish that makes the effort legible.

Where a Western reader can stand: Where a Western reader can stand: 成 is 'to complete / succeed / become' — the Latin perficere, the Greek teleō, the fulfilment of Jǐ Jì 既濟 'after completion'; the 論語 praises 君子成人之美, the noble man completes the good in others. Honest caveat: do not translate 成 as 'city' (城) or 'sincerity' (誠) — different graphs — and classically it also means 'already' and a finished musical movement (簫韶九成). Kang Youwei's bold, grounded Wei-stele brush is the monumental hand for 'what was begun is now done', with no real downside to the character.
