Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源

2 · The Character: 冥 Míng (2nd tone). The Shuowen Jiezi: 「幽也。从日从六,冖聲。日數十,十六日而月始虧」 — 'darkness'; Xu Shen reads the graph as sun plus six under a cover, because after the sixteenth day the moon begins to wane. Duan Yucai's note corrects the gloss to 「窈也」, deep-dark. 《诗经·小雅·无将大车》 has 「无将大车,维尘冥冥」 — 'do not push the great cart, the dust is thick and blinding'. 《庄子·逍遥游》 opens with 「北冥有鱼,其名为鲲」, where 冥 is the abyssal northern sea. 《荀子·劝学》 praises 「无冥冥之志,无昭昭之明」 — no absorbed, dark-deep will, no shining clarity. But this is a funeral character and must be graded honestly. In everyday Chinese 冥 is the standard word for the world of the dead: 冥界, 冥府 (the underworld), 冥币 / 冥钞 (spirit money burned at graves), 冥婚 (ghost marriage), 冥衣, 冥寿. A Chinese reader will see 'the netherworld' first and 'profound meditation' a distant second. Do not tattoo it alone.

Cultural Story

The form showed the sun and the cover, 冥, the dark where light stops. Zhuangzi speaks of 冥 as the undifferentiated deep. The 冥界 was the world below, where the dead ate cold rice. A king was 冥顽, dull as stone, when he would not hear. The word held night, depth, and the unreachable.

Where a Western reader can stand: Where a Western reader can stand: 冥 (míng) means 'dark' or 'deep' — but it is also the Chinese word for the underworld, the realm of the dead (冥界), and 冥婚 is a 'ghost marriage.' So a standalone 冥 on skin reads as death whether you meant it or not. This is a NO-grade character for tattoos. The one safe use is 冥想 (meditation), where 冥 means 'the deeper mind,' not the grave. Ke Jiusi (1290–1343) was a Yuan connoisseur-calligrapher whose regular script, built on Ouyang Xun, is neat and highly legible — so if you want 'meditation,' his hand makes 冥想 clean and unmistakable. We render 冥 only inside 冥想, never alone.

Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

A user opens a 冥想 app at midnight; the 冥思 group meets in the basement. The game's 冥界 is drawn in blue. The 冥王, Pluto, names a planet on the chart. A child is called 冥顽 for ignoring the teacher; the word now means stubborn more than dark, a habit not a realm.

Why this character belongs on skin

The dark is not empty; it is full of what the light cannot show. This character 冥 layers the cover of night and the eye of silence, the deep place where the sun goes to rest and the dead are kept. The underworld of old China was not a punishment but a country, and to know it was to fear death less. The Daoists say the mystery of mysteries is the gate of all wonder, and it opens only in the dark. A warrior who has looked into it fights without flinching; a lover who has sat with it holds the hand of the dying without looking away. To carry this word is to make peace with the unseen half of everything. Let it rest where shadow falls first, a quiet acknowledgement that you have been to the bottom and came back literate in the language spoken only there.
