Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源

2 · The Character: 垂 Chuí (2nd tone). The Shuowen Jiezi defines 垂 as 「远边也。从土𠂹声」 — 'the far edge, the outermost margin.' Duan Yucai distinguishes 边 (the travelled edge) from 崖 (the high edge) and makes 垂 the frontier beyond both; Cao Zhi writes 「少小去乡邑,扬声沙漠垂」 (《白马篇》), fame carried to the desert's rim. The graph then slid to 'hang down': 《易·系辞下》 「黄帝尧舜垂衣裳而天下治」 — the sages let their robes hang and the world was ordered — and Du Fu's 「星垂平野阔,月涌大江流」. From hanging came bequeathing: 垂范, to hand down a model. Honest warning: 永垂不朽 ('eternally undecaying') is the standard inscription on Chinese martyrs' monuments and gravestones, and 垂危 / 垂死 mean 'at death's door'. A solo 垂 therefore carries a genuine funerary and dying shadow. Pair it — 垂范, 垂柳, 垂纶 — or choose another character. Element tables assign Metal (金); the 土 radical leads some tables to Earth (verify).

Cultural Story

:The Odes let the willow 垂 its branches over the river where the parting friend drank. The Tang frontier sent 垂死 men home from the sand. A gentleman 垂钓 by the stream as a quiet refusal of office. The character is a man and a drop — something hanging, suspended, about to fall.

Where a Western reader can stand: The robe that hangs while the world is ordered: 垂's beautiful face — but the funeral register (永垂不朽, 垂危) is live. Western readers should wear a phrase (垂范); the hand is attributed.

Why this character belongs on skin

The willow bends its branches to the water as if mourning something it loves and cannot hold. 垂 is to hang down, to droop, the tender descending of a bough, a sleeve, a gaze. And yet the same character means to bequeath, to let something of you descend to those who come after; 永垂不朽, to be eternally transmitted, never perishing. The drooping and the enduring are one gesture: what bends low enough to touch the stream leaves a reflection that outlives the tree. To wear 垂 is to honor the gentle descent, the gift you pass down by bowing rather than towering. Let it hang on your skin like a willow branch, a small character that says you leaned toward what you loved, and in leaning you left something behind that the water will remember long after the branch has turned to quiet and ordinary dust.
