Cultural Story

带 is the simplified 帶, a girdle or sash, and the Shuowen shows it as a belt hanging from the waist, fringed below. In ritual dress the 带 marked rank - jade hung from it, seals tucked in it. To be 'bound by' the 带 was to be equipped and dignified. Because a belt encircles and connects, 带 also gained 'to lead' and 'to carry along,' as a river 带 brings life to the land it winds through.

In the martial arts the sash is earned, not bought; it binds the robe against the wind and reminds the body where its center is. To wear this mark is to honor the tie that links you to someone, a child, a lover, a dead father. It is the line that connects, and the line that sets free. Ink it as a thin band around the arm or ankle, a quiet vow that you are held, and that you hold.
