Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源
2 · The Character: 历 Lì (4th tone). The Shuowen: 「歷,過也。一曰經歷」 — to pass over, and by extension to experience. The Documents warn 「殺人歷人」 (《書·梓材》), and Mencius cautions 「不歷位而相與言」 (《孟子·離婁》) — do not cross another's place to speak. Yet 历 is mostly bright: 歷史 (history), 歷歷在目 (clearly before the eyes), 歷山 (Mount Li, where Shun tilled). It means the road travelled and what it taught. As a tattoo it stands for experience and endurance — 'I have passed through.' Safe and affirmative. One note: 历 is the simplified form of 歷/曆; a Chinese-literate viewer may read it as 'calendar' (曆) too. Element tables assign Fire (火).
Cultural Story
历 meant to pass through, then a calendar of days passed. Zu Chongzhi fixed the Daming calendar in the fifth century, correcting the year's length to fine fractions. The same graph names 历史, what has been passed through. Sima Qian, after his punishment, spent his life setting the record of dynasties in order -- 历尽 the hardships of a task that outlasted him.
Where a Western reader can stand: Li Jianzhong, nicknamed Li Xitai, was an early Song calligrapher whose running script kept Tang structural solidity while adding a relaxed, personal warmth; Su Shi admired him. His 历 is the road travelled written calmly and humanely — experience not as triumph but as a life quietly endured and understood.

Why this character belongs on skin
历 is to pass through, to undergo, to climb each ridge of a mountain range and know it by the climbing. It carries the calendar's count of days and the traveler's count of trials. Nothing is 历 until you have lived it in the body — the cold, the delay, the long road that teaches what books cannot. To wear it is to honor experience over argument, the scar over the theory. We are shaped by weather we did not choose. The mark says: I have been through, and the through-ing made me. Let it sit where you can touch it in hard seasons, proof that you have survived previous winters and will survive this one. 历 is not nostalgia; it is armor forged from time. Carry it, and let the past be the ground beneath your feet rather than the weight upon your back.
