罗 was the bird net: spread it and the sparrows fall in. 史记 sketched a fallen minister's gate where 门外可设雀罗 — you could net sparrows outside — the image behind 门可罗雀. Silk gauze took the name too, 罗衣 for the lightest summer robes, and the mariner's 罗盘 later borrowed the net for its circling needle.
