堂 is the raised main hall of a courtyard house, the room of guests and rites. The Tang poet Du Fu (杜甫) dreamed of 『安得广厦千万间』 to shelter poor scholars; his own 草堂 (Thatched Hall) at Chengdu is now a museum garden. In the novel Honglou Meng (Dream of the Red Chamber), the 荣国府 halls host birthday feasts. 堂兄 marks a cousin of the same clan surname.
