Cultural Story
The 'Dream of the Red Chamber' opens with a 顽石, the stubborn block the goddess left out of the sky-mending, which falls to earth as the jade at the story's heart. The 顽 of that stone is not evil but refusal to be smoothed, the 顽童 and the 顽症 both carrying that same hard grain. To call a thing 顽 was to name the part that will not yield, whether a child, an illness, or a rock.

Read the story behind the character
A doctor labels the case a 顽症 after the usual drugs fail, the 顽固 infection holding through the course. A parent laughs at the 顽皮 son who hid the keys again, the 顽强 streak that also helps him on the team. The 顽 of the illness and the 顽皮 of the boy share a word, and the 顽症 finally breaks when the 顽强 child sits still for the shot.
Why this character belongs on skin
A rough stone does not apologize for its edges. There is a child in the mountains who refuses to be taught, who laughs at the master's rod and keeps his own wild counsel — the Chinese call him the stubborn child, and they do not always mean it as scorn. Daoism honors the uncarved block, the wood unshaped by the carpenter's rule. To be this is to keep the grain of your own nature, to be the boulder the river cannot smooth. Lovers speak of a stubborn heart that will not be reasoned out of love. Ink this on the shoulder and you declare: I am not finished, not corrected, not made small. The world polishes its citizens into compliance, but you keep your rough music. Let the soft ones call it folly; the stone outlasts the hand that chips it. There is freedom in refusal, a quiet dignity in the unbroken. Wear the grain.
