Cultural Story
欲 meant desire and the will that drives a person. The Shuowen reads it as greed or wanting, and the philosophers fought over it: the Daodejing warned that 欲望 unchecked desire burns the spirit, while Mencius spoke of right 欲求 as natural. To have 食欲 was simply to be hungry, a bodily truth no sage denied, yet 贪欲 greed was the trap.

Read the story behind the character
Modern life talks of 欲 all the time: we feel 食欲 appetite before a meal, chase a 欲求 desire for a new phone, and warn against 贪欲 greed for money. A self-help book tells you not to 纵欲 indulge every desire, and a friend confesses a craving. From a rumbling stomach to a shopping spree, 欲 names the want that moves us, for better and for worse.
Why this character belongs on skin
Desire was never the sin they told you it was. In Chinese, 欲 is plain wanting — the hunger that says yes before the mind catches up, the body's honest vote. The Buddhists named it kāma and warned against the clinging, but tonight we are not monks; we are alive, and wanting is the proof. Your wanting is not too much. Not too loud, too queer, too specific. The world hands you a list of acceptable appetites and hopes you starve quietly — but 欲 is the part of you that orders the second course. Let it be unashamed. The right to want is the root of every freedom you've ever touched. Ink it where only your person will find it, a small confession in a language they'll learn by heart. Desire, claimed, is a kind of prayer.
