Laozi points to the wheel, and 辐 is the spoke, the slender rod from rim to center. In the Daodejing he writes: 'Thirty spokes gather at one hub; it is the empty space that makes the cart useful' — 三十辐共一毂. 辐条 is its plain modern name; 辐辏 the crowd converging like spokes; 辐射 the rays a thing sends outward from its core to the dark.
