Cultural Story

King Zhao of Yan raised the 黄金台, a tower of gold, to draw worthy men from across the warring states with the promise that talent would be paid in precious metal. The 黄金 of that platform became the proverb for a ruler's open hand. From that mound the character kept the lure of the metal and the worth a kingdom set on a gifted mind.

Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

A bank dispenses 现金 from its atrium machine, a workshop sorts 金属 scrap by grade, and a pet shop bubbles a tank of 金鱼 for the children. The 金钱 of a transfer clears by morning. The character now guards a vault and a fishbowl, the old gold of a king's tower carried into ready money, a length of steel, and the orange coin swimming behind glass.

Why this character belongs on skin

Fire does not destroy everything. Pit the ore, drown it in heat, and what survives the crucible is 金 — gold, the metal that will not rust, will not weep, will not yield to time. The ancients measured a man's word by gold's standard: 金言, words that do not tarnish. 金 also names the west, the autumn, the sharpened edge of evening light on armor. To bear this character is to claim the part of you that endures — not the soft flesh, but the alloy beneath, tempered by whatever tried to break it. Lovers etch vows in gold because only gold remembers. Carry 金 on your skin and you carry a quiet boast: that the furnace found you and you came out shining. Let it be the permanent thing in a temporary body, the one mark that will outlast the burning.
