Mencius urged the ruler to 推恩, extend his kindness from those he loves outward to the realm, the hand that pushes goodwill beyond its first circle. 推 is the forward push that is also a spreading, the motion of a conscience grown large, and the ruler who pushed his kindness only as far as the capital lost the realm to a cousin who pushed his army farther.
