Cultural Story

In the Han and Tang, texts were copied and stored as handscrolls, each section called a juan. The Records of the Grand Historian runs to 130 juan. Emperor Guangwu was said never to let a scroll leave his hands -- "手不释卷" -- reading between battles. A painter's 画卷 unfurls left to right: Gu Kaizhi's Admonitions handscroll is ink and color on silk, meant to be read by rolling, not by pages.

Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

A student fills in a 卷子 at the exam hall; the proctor collects the 试卷 and files it in a 卷宗. In a design studio a finished 画卷 is rolled and tubed for shipping. At home someone 卷起 the bamboo blinds against the afternoon sun. The word still measures books -- a novel in three volumes is "three juan" -- and it measures a test paper just as literally.

Why this character belongs on skin

Silk curls upon itself and the painting disappears into a tube — 卷 is the roll, the scroll, the thing gathered up and carried, the volume of a life's writing. A painter 卷 his work at dusk; a student unrolls a 卷 to begin the exam; a river 卷 its water around the stone. To 卷 is to hold the whole in a small compass, to be coiled and ready, not spent. The West files things flat; the East keeps them rolled, intimate, close to the body. Carry 卷 where you fold yourself inward, the forearm, the place that bends. Let it say you are not yet unfolded, that your story is still wound in your own hands. The ink is a scroll drawn on skin, a quiet pull toward the unwritten pages you carry, and the day you choose to open them.
