虫 is the broadest of creatures: insects, worms, and in old novels even tigers, which heroes respectfully called 大虫. Early script hid snakes inside the shape, and classifiers once sorted reptiles among the 虫. Farmers feared 虫灾, insect plagues that ate whole harvests, and physicians studied 蛀虫 gnawing through wood, books, and intestines alike.
