Cultural Story

蚕 is the silkworm, maker of China's oldest secret. Legend says Empress Leizu discovered silk when a cocoon dropped into her tea; for millennia the insect was state treasure, its export punishable by death. Poets mourned its devotion — the spring silkworm spins silk until death — and strategists used 蚕食, nibbling like a silkworm, for encroachment that swallows kingdoms leaf by leaf.

In the modern world

Silk's economy still hums. In Jiangsu villages, families 养蚕 (rear silkworms), trays of larvae munching mulberry day and night until 蚕茧 (silkworm cocoon) fill baskets; factories reel 蚕丝 (silk thread) into quilts tourists buy by weight. Grocers, meanwhile, sell 蚕豆 (broad bean) in spring — the bean named for its cocoon shape — and negotiators still accuse rivals of 蚕食 (nibbling away, encroaching) on market share.

Why this character belongs on skin

It eats only the mulberry, and then it spins — enclosing itself in a coffin of its own making, and from that dark enclosure comes the silk that clothes emperors and shrouds the dead. Cán is the silkworm, the humble laborer of the leaf who teaches the oldest lesson of transformation: that death and the cocoon are the same shape, and what emerges is not what entered. The Daoist saw in cán the soul's own folding and unwritten flight; the poor farmer saw his only wealth crawling the tray. To wear this character is to honor the quiet worker in you, the one who consumes pain and produces something the world will wear as beauty. Ink it where the body is softest, the inner arm, a small emblem of the chrysalis you have survived, and the silk you somehow spun from it. Let it say you were once enclosed, and you broke the thread, and you flew — or you are spinning still, and that is holy too.
