Cultural Story
埽 (sǎo) was a bundle of brushwood and stone wrapped in straw, sunk to mend riverbanks. In the Song dynasty's river manuals, 埽工 meant this fascine work, and 帚埽 the humble act of sweeping a courtyard. The statesman Jia Lu (贾鲁) rebuilt the Yellow River's 埽 defenses in 1351 after catastrophic floods broke the levees. A humble word for a humble tool — bundles that held the shifting silt of a restless, flooding river.

Read the story behind the character
Today 埽 survives mostly in old river-engineering texts; 帚埽 simply means to sweep a courtyard with a broom. Few speak the word aloud, yet its logic endures where sandbags stack against a swollen river and workers 堵塞 leaks with bundled reeds. The character names a craft of holding water back with what the land itself provides, a technique older than any concrete weir.
Why this character belongs on skin
First the sound of bristles on stone, then the meaning opens like a fan. Sao is to sweep, and in ancient flood control it named something stranger: great bundles of sorghum stalks, willow and earth, lashed together and sunk against the current to hold a dike in place. One word holds both the humble broom and the desperate engineering of rivermen fighting for their villages—clarity and labor, the tidy floor and the drowning field. That double life is the point. Every life requires sweeping: the daily clearing away of what accumulates, resentment, regret, the dust of old selves. Buddhism makes of it a meditation, the monk sweeping leaves knowing more will fall, and loving the falling anyway. Confucius made the boy sweep the threshold before he learned anything else. To wear this character is to confess that you keep your own house—your mind, your losses—swept and tended, and that you will pile stone and brush against whatever flood comes. Clean, and unafraid.
