Cultural Story
Xiu is the cave-mouth in a mountain, or the peak itself where cloud gathers. Tao Yuanming's clouds leave the xiu unwilled made xiu the emblem of effortless retreat. The Wen Xuan praises yuan xiu (distant peaks) on the horizon, and painters set shan xiu (mountain caves) as the hermit's door. It is the soft, poetic face of the hills.

Read the story behind the character
A travel post raves about yuan xiu (distant peaks) glowing at sunset over the lake. Someone renovating a courtyard names it shan xiu (mountain cave) after a tucked-away study. Poets online borrow xiu yun (cave clouds) for captions of mist on the ridge, and a tea farmer points to yan xiu (rocky peaks) where his best leaves grow in the cool shade.
Why this character belongs on skin
There is a moment at dawn when the mountains breathe—the mist rising out of their hollows like the slow exhale of something ancient and asleep. 岫 names that hollow, the cave in the cliffside, and by extension the cloud-wrapped peak itself. Tao Yuanming, China's great poet of returning home, wrote the line that made this character immortal: the unintentional clouds rise from the mountain caves, as the tired bird returns to roost. Unintentional—the clouds do not labor to be beautiful. That is the Taoist heart of 岫: withdrawal that is not defeat, depth that does not announce itself. The hermit's cave, the lover's inner life, the parts of you seen only by candlelight. Ink 岫 where only someone invited will find it, and let them read the poem. Mystery, worn like skin, is the oldest seduction there is.
