Cultural Story
The 槐, or locust tree, was the gentleman's tree of old China. The Shuowen links it to the 鬼 sound, but its real prestige came from placement: the court planted 槐 before the offices of the Three Dukes, so 槐 came to stand for high office and scholar-officials. In the Tang tale The Governor of the Southern Tributary, a man dreams of ruling the 槐安 kingdom beneath a locust tree, waking to find only an ants' nest — making 槐 a classical symbol of illusory glory.

Read the story behind the character
Today the 槐树 still shades northern streets, and in late spring 槐花 locust flowers perfume the air as vendors sell them for fritters. Children suck 洋槐 blossoms on the way home, while a tired office worker might joke that his promotion was pure 槐安, a dream that dissolved by morning. From schoolyards to sidewalk snack stalls, the scholar tree keeps its ancient dignity even as city life rushes past beneath its dappled shade.
Why this character belongs on skin
In every old Chinese village there is a locust tree, and under it, centuries. 槐 is the scholar tree, planted by hands long dead, and it became the emblem of eminence: in the Tang court, the three highest ministers were called the Three Locusts, and planting a locust in the courtyard was a father's prayer that his sons would rise. Its wood is dense and golden; its flowers in June fall like slow white confetti, faintly sweet, gathered for medicine and wine. The ghost story tradition loves it too—old locusts hold spirits, 鬼 in the character, whispers under the canopy—and so the tree gathers everything: ambition, ancestry, shade, the unseen. A tree you dream beneath. Zhuangzi even dreamed of a whole kingdom in the hollow of a locust, one lifetime inside an afternoon's nap. This is ink for people with deep roots and high hopes, the ones who intend to become someone others rest under. The character is heavy, deliberate, beautiful. Like the tree, it rewards the long view.
