The Calligrapher — Lù Jiǎnzhī 陆柬之
Tang calligrapher and nephew of Yu Shinan; his running-script 'Essay on Literature' survives
Tang calligrapher (), master of running script — known for 《文赋》. Tang dynasty
Cultural Story
Wang Xizhi's Preface to the Orchid Pavilion, traced in xingshu, the running script, is the model every calligrapher copies, its strokes half-joined like a walker who will not quite stop. The script sits between the square formality of regular and the abandon of grass, a pace of writing made visible. To write xing is to let the brush keep moving.

Read the story behind the character
On a phone a commuter opens her yinhang app to pay a bill, then hoists xingli onto the train rack. A manager speaks of a company's xingwei and its xingye, and a sign reads jinxing for work in progress. The single character spans the bank, the suitcase, the act, and the trade, a restless word for everything that moves.
Why this character belongs on skin
Knowing the path is nothing. Walking it is everything. 行 is to move, to act, to conduct oneself through the world — the Confucian burn that turns philosophy into feet on the road. The Buddha spoke; but it was the walking, the going forth, that made him real. To wear this character is to refuse the paralysis of overthinking. Theory is cheap; the step is the sacrifice. Ink 行 on the sole of the foot or the back of the hand, and you carry a commandment written in motion: do not merely understand, become. The longest journey begins with the character that means simply go. Most people die having only considered the life they wanted. This mark is the one that gets you out the door.
