Cultural Story

The annals record that Confucius, brief months as minister of crime, zhu Shaozheng Mao, executed the rival teacher Shaozheng Mao, judging him a danger to public order. The character zhu joins words to a punishment by death; to zhu was the state's final sentence, the removal of a man judged beyond reform. From the historian's cold clause to the battlefield's reckoning, zhu was the word for the sanction that admitted no appeal.

In the modern world

A verdict zhu sha, executes, a spy; a warlord fu zhu, is executed, after the trial; a column kou zhu, condemns verbally, a scandal; an army zhu mie, exterminates, a revolt. The character lives in the language of the ultimate sanction, the headline, the verdict, the curse that wishes an end. It names the moment power decides a life or a name must be erased, the old, sober word for the sentence from which there is no coming back.

Why this character belongs on skin

Speech radical beside a blade—诛 is judgment that ends things: the executioner's word, the sentence passed, the name struck from the register. Confucius recorded that when a deceitful minister was put to death, the whole state understood; justice, he thought, must be visible or it is nothing. But 诛 grew a subtler blade: 笔诛, the execution by pen, the condemnation that outlives any court—history's verdict, written and permanent. Every culture knows both edges: the axe and the archive, the power to kill and the longer power to judge forever. To ink 诛 is to carry the sword honestly—your own standards, final and unbribeable, the inner judge you refuse to silence. Not cruelty. Cleanness. A line, drawn once, that no one crosses twice.
