Cultural Story
In the 诗经's 静女, a girl 贻我彤管, presents her lover with a red reed pipe, and the small gift outshines jade in his eyes. 贻 here means to hand something down or across, a quiet act of giving. Later ages widened it to 贻笑, leaving ridicule, and 贻害, leaving harm behind. The gift that binds two people appears again in 贻赠 between friends at parting.
Common words & phrases
- 贻笑 cause ridicule

Read the story behind the character
In a lab meeting, a researcher fears 贻误 a deadline and 贻害 the whole project by citing a flawed paper. A clumsy public statement can 贻笑 before experts who notice the error at once. Though 贻赠 survives in formal thanks, the character mostly warns of damage quietly passed to others. The lesson of the reed pipe is that a small thing can outweigh a heavy one.
Why this character belongs on skin
A gift passed hand to hand across the years — sometimes a treasure, sometimes a mistake the descendants must live down. 贻 is what is left behind: the jade, the name, the inherited wound, the quiet fortune of having been loved. The classic warns of 贻笑大方 — to leave oneself open to the laughter of the wise — and so the character carries both honor and caution. To wear it is to reckon with your inheritance, the things you will hand on whether you mean to or not. Let it sit at the chest or the palm, where gifts are given, a mark of the long chain you stand in. Carry it as a question to your future self: what will you leave? Wear it where you receive and where you give, and let it bless the stubborn hope that what you pass on might be better than what you were given.
