The 庄子 tells of a follower of Mozi who traveled 百舍重趼, a hundred lodgings, his feet 重趼, thick with callus, never daring to rest, so devoted was he to his master's tireless way. 趼 is the hardened skin of the road, the wage paid by the sole. 老趼 still marks a working hand.

Read the story behind the character
At a guitar lesson, a beginner's fingertips grow 老趼, calluses, from the strings while a farmer shows 足趼, callused feet, earned in the field and a granny calls the rough patch a 趼子. The philosopher's hundred lodgings have shrunk to a practice chair, but the skin tells the same story. The hardened skin is the quiet certificate of any work done by hand or foot.
