Yue is a lofty peak, and the wu yue (Five Sacred Mountains) are its great company, the holy summits emperors visited. By a gentle turn of custom, yue also became father-in-law, as if the wife's father were a mountain to be respected. The Shuo Wen ties it to lofty heights, and poetry climbs shan yue (mountains) to gaze down on mortal cares.
