情 is what moves before reason speaks. Tang Xianzu's 牡丹亭 opens on the line 情不知所起，一往而深 — love with no known source, only depth. The heart with 青, the green of growing things, is feeling as something alive and unplanned. The play argues that 情 can raise the dead, which is rather the point.
