Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源
2 · The Character: 林 Lín (2nd tone). Shuowen Jiezi defines 林 as 平土有叢木曰林 — 'a cluster of trees on level ground is a forest', simply two 木 (wood) side by side. The graph is pictographic abundance. Qū Yuán's 楚辭·九章·涉江 cries 深林杳以冥冥兮,乃猨狖之所居 — 'the deep forest is dim and dark; there the apes and monkeys dwell', a place of retreat and mystery. Kangxi counts eight strokes. Honest disclosure: 林 means 'forest / a gathering of like things'; it is also an extremely common Chinese surname and the 林 of 少林 (Shaolin). No negative or funeral sense. Safe as a standalone of woods, gathering, and quiet refuge; pair with 泉 (spring) or 深 (deep) for a hermit-forest frame, or keep it lone as a symbol of many small strengths standing together.
Cultural Story
林 is two trees, a stand, and many stands make 森林. The 桃花源 hides beyond a 林; hermits withdrew to 山林 to escape office. The 竹林 became famous as the home of the Seven Sages of the Wei-Jin, who drank and played qin among the bamboo. The character is the company of trees, a small society of trunks.

Why this character belongs on skin
Two trees make a grove; many make a world. This character — forest — is simply tree beside tree, yet it opens like a gate onto the oldest silence we know. The Daoists wandered such woods to lose the self on purpose, to let the small anxious voice go quiet under a canopy that does not care about your name. There is a war-music to the forest too: Sun Tzu read the trees for the enemy's movement, knowing that wood remembers footsteps. To carry it on your skin is to claim both the solitude and the company of things that grow without apology. It is the mark of one who has stood among taller, older lives and felt small in the right way. Let it lie along your ribs like a treeline, a reminder that you are both alone and utterly accompanied.
