2 · The Character: 通 通 (tōng) is 辵 (movement) with 甬 as phonetic. The Shuowen Jiezi (《说文解字》 辵部) glosses it in one word — '通，達也', to get through, to arrive. The Yijing turns that into cosmology: 《易·系辞上》 '往来不穷谓之通' (coming and going without exhaustion is called penetration) and '推而行之谓之通'; 《易·说卦》 assigns the quality to water, '坎为通'. 《礼记·学记》 makes it the scholar's goal, '知类通达' — to know the categories and get through to them. 《周礼·地官》 even measures farmland by it: '方里为井，井十为通'.
