罩 was a cover with work to do: the basket-net a fisherman stamped over a corner of the pond, the cage set over a lamp's flame. Covering meant controlling — the fish under the basket, the wind off the flame. From the pond the word spread to anything that settles over a scene and will not lift.

Why this character belongs on skin

Some things are seen only through what hides them. 罩 is the net radical plus an old word for a birdcage—to cover, to veil, to shroud. Fog 罩着 the harbor. A bride's veil, a lamp's shade, the gauze over a lantern that turns hard light into rumor. Buddhism loves this image: reality itself 罩着一层 illusion, and we spend our lives half-seeing, guessing at shapes behind the gauze. But veiling is also intimacy. Skin itself is a 罩—the sheerest cover over everything you actually are, shown to almost no one, which is why a scar or a tattoo feels like a confidence, a secret lifted an inch. There is a particular tension in a covered thing: the lamp under its shade, the face behind lace.
