Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源
2 · The Character: 力 Lì (4th tone). The Shuowen Jiezi: 「筋也。象人筋之形。治功曰力,能圉大災」 — 'sinew; the graph pictures a human tendon. Ordered achievement is called 力; it can ward off great disaster.' (Modern palaeography reads the oracle-bone graph as a digging-stick or plough instead — labour, not muscle — and both readings are honest.) Xu Shen's definition is the important one for a tattoo: 力 is not raw violence, it is the capacity that gets work done and holds catastrophe off. 《孟子·梁惠王上》 draws the line 「以力假仁者霸,以德行仁者王」 — rule by force and you are a hegemon, rule by virtue and you are a true king; 力 alone is never enough. 《论语·述而》 notes 「子不語怪、力、亂、神」, the Master did not speak of the strange, of force, of disorder, of spirits. 《荀子·王制》 observes that man is 「力不若牛,走不若馬,而牛馬爲用」. 力 is a free morpheme, entirely positive in modern use (努力, 能力, 力量), with no funerary reading.
Cultural Story
(The 道德经 says "胜人者有力,自胜者强" — to beat another is force, to beat oneself is strength. The character 力 is the bent arm of a man lifting a load. It names the push in a muscle and the firmer pull a person turns on their own want.
Where a Western reader can stand: Sinew — the capacity to do work that wards off disaster. Western readers should hear effort and ability, not brute power; it is one of the safest characters in the language.

Read the story behind the character
The 力量 in the legs carries the load up. She 努力 through the night shift. The 力气 fails by the third floor. The 能力 shows in the result. The word names the push, the try, and the capacity a body or a mind holds. The dockworker tests his 力气 on the crate, the coach praises the 有力 finish, and the grant measures the 能力 of the team.
Why this character belongs on skin
力 is strength, but not the kind you photograph. The character is a pictograph of a sinew, a tendon under load — the slow muscle, not the flex. The Chinese never confused 力 with dominance; it is the effort a thing costs, the pull of the plow, the lift that leaves you breathing hard. To carry 力 is to honor the unglamorous work of simply enduring. We are told strength is silent and certain; the truth is it is loud and tired and repeated. This mark is for the person who shows up past the point of wanting to. It is the vow to keep pulling when the field is mostly stone. Some wear lions and eagles; you could do worse than the plain stroke that means the arm that will not quit. Ink it where your own strength lives — the shoulder, the wrist — a quiet pact with the part of you that has always finished what it started.
