The Jingkang Incident of 1127 saw the Jurchen capture the Song emperors and haul them north, an event branded the 靖康之耻 and mourned in a hundred poems of lost capital. The reign name 靖康 had promised 靖, a settled peace; the 靖乱 that followed never recovered the north. To write the character 靖 after that year was to taste the gap between a word and its betrayed hope.
