墨 is ink, once a stick of soot and animal glue rubbed on a wet stone. The 文房四宝 (four treasures of the study) pair 墨 with the brush; 王羲之 (Wang Xizhi) wrote his 兰亭序 in flowing 水墨. 墨宝 (treasured writing) honors a master's strokes above all gifts. 水墨 (ink wash) became a whole painting tradition of graded greys and empty space.

Grind the soot on the stone, add the water, and the black that will outlast everything arrives. 墨 is ink, one of the four treasures of the scholar's studio—brush, paper, inkstone, ink—and the spine of three thousand years of civilization. Every examination essay, every imperial edict, every love poem that survived its dynasty did so as 墨. The calligraphers took it further and made it a metaphysics. Zhuangzi's idea made visible: what is not painted is also the painting. And the word went into the body of the culture—胸无点墨, not a drop of ink in the chest: unlearned.
