Cultural Story

渠 is the great channel that carries water to the fields; the Shiji credits canals and 河渠 (waterways) with feeding the Han people. Villages dug 水渠 (canals) from the mountain stream, and the 沟渠 (ditches) around the granary kept the grain dry. A 渠道 (conduit) of merit flowed from good irrigation.

The farm 水渠 (canal) runs bright with meltwater, and the city's 明渠 (open canal) doubles as a walkway. He found a new 渠道 (channel, means) to ship the products overseas, while the 沟渠 (ditch) beside the road needs clearing. The 河渠 map shows every 渠 feeding the plain.

Why this character belongs on skin

Qú is the channel a farmer digs so the mountain's water will obey him — a straight man-made vein carrying the wild river to the rice. The ancients also used 渠 as a word for 'he,' a distant, almost mythic third person, as if every man worth naming were also a conduit something larger ran through. To be 渠 is to be the thing that carries, not the source. The Daoist knows the sage is hollow, a channel, and thus never runs dry. There is a humility in this, and a power: the canal does not boast, yet the whole valley eats because of it. Wear qú and you confess you are a passage, not a spring — that love, grief, grace, all of it flows through you toward someone else. That is not smallness. That is how the world gets fed.
