Cultural Story

蓐 is bedding — the straw mat on which a household slept and, crucially, on which a mother gave birth: 坐蓐, literally 'sitting on the mats,' was the classical phrase for childbed, and 蓐席, the straw mat, appears in ritual texts laying out what a new household must be furnished with. Poorer homes slept on exactly this: woven reeds, worn smooth by generations. The character carries that intimacy — the last surface before sleep, the first surface beneath a newborn.

Common words & phrases

Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

蓐 is nearly a museum piece now, surviving in set phrases. A historical drama subtitles a birth scene with 坐蓐, childbed, and viewers reach for a dictionary; a museum reconstructs a Han household complete with 蓐席, straw mats, rolled by the bed frame. An antique dealer labels a woven reed mat 蓐 and explains its use to a curious buyer. Mostly the character dozes in dictionaries, waiting for the next costume drama.

Why this character belongs on skin

蓐 is the woven rush mat—the bed itself, in the old tongue, 蓐寝, to sleep on woven grass. Beneath it lies 陈草, old grass renewed: the character builds bedding out of last year's harvest, dried stalks braided into rest. There is profound humility here. Emperors slept on silk and died like anyone; the monk's mat and the peasant's mat are the same word. Every night you lie down is a small rehearsal of mortality—the Buddhists were blunt about it, the deathbed as the final mat—yet it is also the most honest pleasure a body knows: horizontal, warm, forgiven. Ink 蓐 low on the ribs, near where you sleep. A promise to keep making your bed out of the year before, and lying down in it gladly.
