组 was plaited silk cord, and in Han times the width and color of a man's 组绶, the ribbon from which his seal hung, told the court exactly how exalted he was. Silk braid, therefore, was rank made visible. From cords that bound things neatly into bundles came the sense of gathering people or things into an ordered whole.
