葡 never travels without 萄: the pair transliterated the word for grape as it entered Chinese along the Western Regions trade routes, likely via a Dayuan or Persian term recorded when Zhang Qian's missions opened the silk roads. Han court records marvel at the grape wine of Ferghana; Tang tombs held grapes among the silver cups.
