In the Songs of Chu fragrant grass is a standing metaphor for the good and loyal, and a whole moral vocabulary grew from scent: an aromatic name, a sweet reputation, fragrance passed down a hundred generations. The phrase they kept was 'leave your fāng,' meaning to pass through the world and remain in memory, sweet and unspoiled, long after the body is gone.
