Cultural Story

缤纷 scatters color in every direction. 屈原 wore 佩缤纷其繁饰兮 — sashes and fragrant herbs crowded on his belt, a poet's defiant magnificence. Later, 桃花源记 sent the fisherman through 落英缤纷, drifts of fallen petals paving the way to the hidden village. The word always means profusion: more color, more petals, more than the eye can sort.

Common words & phrases

• 缤纷 profuse · dazzling · multicolored

Read the story behind the character

Markets love the profusion. Stalls sell 缤纷 (profuse, multicolored) macarons in rainbow rows; mall atriums hang 五彩缤纷 lanterns for the New Year; spring petals fall 落英缤纷 over the university lawn and every phone comes out at once. Skincare gift boxes promise 缤纷 flavors, and kids' menus arrive dazzling enough to match the word.

Why this character belongs on skin

Qu Yuan, China's first great poet, watched petals fall in 那风吹缤纷—wind rising, blossoms swirling in wild, colorful profusion. 缤 exists almost only inside that word, 缤纷: riotous color, petals and confetti and scattering light. It is a character made of silk and abundance, motion without destination. There is a Buddhist reading, too—ten thousand things arising and falling, gorgeous precisely because nothing stays. To wear 缤 is to choose abundance over order, to love the moment when the cherry tree lets go all at once and the whole street turns pink and ephemeral. Some people want permanence from a tattoo. You wanted the falling petals instead. The Song critics called such work living color—painting that looks as if it might scatter at any breath. Most art tries to stop time. This character rides it. You wanted the party while it lasts.
