Cultural Story

In the 史记, after his plot fails, Jing Ke leans on a pillar and 箕踞, sits with legs spread, to curse the King of Qin, the posture of a man who no longer cares for courtesy. 踞 is that crouching occupation of space; 盘踞 means a force entrenched, and 虎踞 a tiger claiming its rock. The spread-legged curse was the last defiance of a man who had lost everything.

Common words & phrases

Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

At a briefing, an analyst says rebels 盘踞, entrench, in the hills while a cat 踞坐, sits crouched, by the fire and a statue 虎踞, crouches like a tiger, at a gate. A rude guest 箕踞, sprawls, on the sofa. Jing Ke's defiant slouch now names a stronghold and a lounging pet. The entrenched force and the lounging cat both claim their space with a crouch.

Why this character belongs on skin

Watch a tiger on a rock and you understand this character: the crouch that is not submission but claim. Its foot radical carries a sound meaning home — to squat on high ground is to own it, to occupy, to sit as master. The old geographies spoke of mountains crouching over rivers, of generals holding passes the way a lion holds a kill. There is animal patience here, the same stillness the predator keeps before the pounce, the same authority a founder keeps in a room he built. Confucius sat formally, knees folded, and that grave ease was itself a throne. To wear this character is to announce territory — of body, of mind, of will. It says: I am not passing through. I have crouched where I intend to remain, and the ground has agreed with me, and whatever comes will have to negotiate.
