Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源
2 · The Character: 千 Qiān (1st tone). The Shuowen is terse: 「千,十百也。从十从人」 — a thousand, ten hundreds, with 人 (person) as phonetic. It quickly became the word for 'many': 千鈞一髮 (a thousand-weight hair — a hair's-breadth), 千言萬語 (a thousand words). The rhyme-prose 趙都賦 sings 「食客過兮三千」 (three thousand guests). So 千 is abundance and reach, not a literal number. As a free morpheme it stands alone with positive weight — 'countless, far-reaching.' No funeral or negative sense. One disclosure: to a Chinese reader 千 alone can feel like the first half of a cliché (千…萬…); pair it if you want a self-contained read, but it is safe. Element tables assign Metal (金).
Cultural Story
Laozi warns that “千里之行,始于足下” — the journey of a thousand li begins beneath the foot. 千 was the number that meant far beyond counting; 千里 the distance a letter or a refugee traveled, 千秋 the reign a court wished its prince. The word stretches the small hand to the horizon.
Where a Western reader can stand: The thousand-fold reach, written by the founding theorist of the brush — in his own surviving autograph. Western readers should pair 千 (千里); alone it feels like half a phrase.
