Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源

2 · The Character: 展 Zhǎn (3rd tone). The Shuowen Jiezi places 展 in the 尸 section: 「展,转也。从尸,𧝑省声」 — 'to turn, to revolve', a body rolling over. From turning came unrolling, and from unrolling came spreading, displaying, developing. The Songs preserve two layers at once. 《诗经·周南·关雎》 gives 「悠哉悠哉,辗转反侧」 — 'long, long the night; I toss and turn' — where 辗转 grows directly out of 展转. 《诗经·鄘风·君子偕老》 gives the adverbial sense: 「展如之人兮,邦之媛也」 — 'truly, a woman such as this is the beauty of the state.' So 展 carries three linked meanings: to turn, to unfold, to be genuine. It is a free morpheme and stands alone. Disclosures: in modern Chinese 展 is read first as 展览 / 展会 — 'exhibition, trade fair' — so a literate viewer may see a convention-centre word before a poetic one; 展 is also a very common given-name character. Element tables assign Fire (火).

Cultural Story

展 shows a man and 衣, meaning to unfold or spread out; the Shuowen gives to unfold. A scroll was 展开 (unfolded) to read, and a peacock 展 (displayed) its tail. To 发展 (develop) a state and 展现 (reveal) virtue were court ideals, and a 展望 (prospect) looked hopefully to the future.

Where a Western reader can stand: Where a Western reader can stand: 'to unfold' — what was rolled up, opened out; Suo Jing's coiled silver hooks release into a long line. Honest caveat: modern Chinese reads 展 first as 展览, exhibition — disclose the unfolding reading.

In the modern world

A museum 展览 (exhibition) lets artists 展示 (display) their work, and the city 发展 (develops) a new line. You 展开 (unfold, open) a map and 展望 (look ahead) the year, while data 展现 (shows, reveals) the trend. The word stretches a folded thing open — a plan, a wing, a career.

Why this character belongs on skin

The letter is opened, the map is spread, the wing that was folded against the body finally extends into the light. This character 展 shows a thing laid flat and pressed outward, the moment of becoming visible. We spend years furled, protecting the tender inner surface, and then one day we decide to open. The Daoists speak of the natural unfolding of the ten thousand things; the warrior unfurls his banner; the lover, a held breath. To carry this word is to mark the choice to stop hiding the shape of yourself. It is not exposure but arrival. Let it rest where you would spread your own hand, a quiet record of the day you stopped folding. The ink is the unfolded wing made permanent, proof that you were once small and curled and chose, deliberately, to take up the room the world had been keeping for you.
