In 'The Creation of the Gods,' the Thunder Ministry looses its 霹雳 to strike the wicked, the 霹 a bolt the gods hurl when words fail. The 霹雷 in the novel answers arrogance with a single blinding blow, and the 霹雳 became the sound of heaven's impatience. To hear it in the tale was to know the skies kept a ledger and a whip.
