Why this character belongs on skin

There is a beauty in the fallen petal that the unopened bud will never know. 败 is to be defeated, to break, to wither, and yet the character wears its ruin without shame, the way autumn wears the brown of spent flowers. The Buddhists name this 无常, impermanence, the law that everything bright must also end, and find in the ending a strange mercy. A soldier who has lost understands more of honor than one who has only won; the crack in the vessel is where the light gets in. To carry 败 is to make peace with your own breaking, to wear the scar as a text. It is not despair but honesty, the courage to be unfinished. Let it mark you where the hurt was, a dark character that says you broke, and you stayed, and the staying was its own quiet kind of victory worth the ink.
